Laser hair removal can be a cost effective and easy way to get rid of unwanted body hair. With little side effects and often great results, laser hair removal has been a common form of beauty or cosmetic treatment for many years. Yet like any beauty treatment, it is always best not to assume it is completely without side effects or totally safe in any circumstances, and to ask the question, is it really safe and what is the best way to have the treatment? It's also important to know how laser hair removal works when considering if it is safe to do.
Laser hair removal - the basics
The process of laser hair removal involves putting a small laser into each individual hair follicle. Basically this burns out each follicle so the hair cannot regrow. An area where all the follicles have been burnt by a laser will remain hairless. Although it can be mildly painful during the process, it doesn't hurt a lot afterwards and although the idea of it could make some patients feel nervous, it is very much an easy and straightforward process for getting rid of unwanted body hair. The laser does not always go right into the hair follicle and can slightly puncture the skin. But this is not too painful and no worse than some pinpricks.
Usually laser hair removal can take around two to six weeks to complete, depending on the type of skin and area of the body to be treated. It is important to keep your skin clean and moisturised during this process. There can be some unpleasant side effects with laser hair removal treatment, although these are usually only temporary effects. Sometimes patients can feel a stinging pain, which has been likened to being ‘pinged' with a rubber band. The area of skin where the laser hair removal treatment occurred could turn pink and feel slightly sunburned as well. These problems should fade within a few hours after the treatment is completed and any swelling or redness quickly subsides.
Always have a consultation first
Before undergoing laser hair removal treatment, it is important to first have a consultation with an appropriately qualified dermatologist. The dermatologist will be able to help you prepare yourself for the laser hair removal treatment, and recommend anything that you can do before the treatment according to your skin type, and advise on the best course of action to take. Apart from this helping you get the best possible effects from the laser hair removal treatment, it can also help if you have a particular skin condition or type, especially if you have sensitive skin.
Not all laser hair removal treatments are the same. For individual patients the laser can be set according to their needs and skin type. This is why it is important to have a consultation first. The laser needs to be set to be tolerable for your skin and hair follicles, while the professional carrying out the procedure for getting rid of the unwanted hair will also be able to advise you or provide you with the best possible after care treatments to keep any swelling or stinging to a minimum.
