Recreational activities and games all have specific vocabulary associated with them. Often times these words also have other meanings when utilized in different contexts. In order to grasp the concept of the game, it is important that you in fact comprehend and can communicate in the language of the game. The game of poker has a lexicon unique to itself. Many of the terms relate to wagering on the game.

When a player puts forth a particular amount of money in the game of poker, this can be known as several different words. This amount of money can be called a wager, bet or ante. The terms are often used interchangeably. One type of bet that you may make in the game of poker is called a blind bet. As the name implies, you make your wager without looking at your cards. Many players enjoy this type of wagering as they find it incredibly exciting not knowing what may happen in the game.

In the game of poker, the word limit is used in several different ways in order to describe limits placed upon the amounts and types of wagers. Most poker tables have a specified fixed limit. This means that the player must meet the minimum wager in order to participate in the poker game. Another limit is a spread limit. Again, this is establishing some boundaries on the amount of the wager but in this case not only is a minimum amount specified but so is a maximum amount. Any wager made must fall in the spread limit.

Another limit is called a pot limit. Players can wager what they like as long as the amount of money in the pot does not exceed a limit placed by the casino. Typically this limit is set high and these games can become quite expensive. No limit refers to the fact that no limit has been established so players are able to place whatever wager they choose. If you choose to play no limit poker, be prepared to have a roll of cash with you. This game can also be quite expensive.
